Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is commonly detected in children. However, the epidemiological trends of MP in Northeast (NE) China are unclear. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the prevalence of MP infections in this understudied region. The clinical manifestations and bronchoscopic findings observed in hospitalized patients with severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (SMPP) were collected from comprehensive data obtained from six tertiary hospitals in NE and Inner Mongolian (IM) China, from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2023. A total of 5,593,530 children who visited the outpatient and emergency departments, and 412,480 inpatient hospitalized children were included in the study. The positivity rate of MP immunoglobulin M (IgM) in the children who visited the outpatient and emergency departments varied from 7.80% to 10.12%, whereas that of MP infection in hospitalized children ranged from 27.18% to 30.10%. Children hospitalized for MP infection were mainly concentrated in the 1- to 4-year (41.39%) and 4- to 7-year (24.25%) age groups. Before 2020, the season with the highest incidence of MP was winter. After the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), the MP epidemic season changed, and the number of children with MP infections decreased; however, the proportion of MP infections in hospitalized children did not change significantly. Starting from August 2023, the MP infection rate in outpatient, emergency, and hospitalized children increased sharply, with SMPP and its complications (e.g., plastic bronchitis and pleural effusion) increasing significantly. MP is prevalent in NE and IM, China. When the NPIs ended, MP infection showed a delayed outbreak trend, and the number of children with severe infection increased significantly. IMPORTANCE: In Northeastern (NE) and Inner Mongolia (IM), the incidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infections, including severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (SMPP), is high, posing health risks and imposing substantial economic burdens on the local population. Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize the study of MP prevalence and address the research gaps in MP epidemiology in these areas of China. We obtained a comprehensive collection of pediatric outpatient, emergency, and inpatient data from six public Grade III hospitals. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because understanding regional variations in MP infections can help healthcare professionals tailor prevention and treatment strategies, and studying bronchoscopic manifestations can provide insights into the impact of the disease on the respiratory system, potentially leading to a more effective clinical management.

Current studies describing younger children with Hodgkin lymphoma are limited by geographical region, small sample sizes and variable age groups. Although published data is lacking, there appears to be a trend toward a higher male to female ratio and a higher proportion of mixed cellularity subtype when compared to older cohorts. We performed a retrospective multicenter study utilizing the Pediatric Health Information System® database to evaluate patients aged 0-39 years with Hodgkin lymphoma. We identified 3,034 unique patients who met inclusion criteria. Younger age groups had a larger proportion of males, Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, and mixed cellularity subtype. Treatment-related complications, including mucositis, pain, bacterial infections, and thrombosis, were documented more frequently in older cohorts. We also found significant age-related differences in medical management. This study is the largest study evaluating age-related differences in patients with Hodgkin lymphomaand the first study to evaluate for differences in complicationsand supportive care management.

Fundamentos: la pandemia de la covid-19 ha tenido un fuerte impacto sobre otras enfermedades infecciosas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar los cambios epidemiológicos acaecidos durante la pandemia en ocho enfermedades infecciosas con patrones epidemiológicos distintos: la gripe; virus respiratorio sincitial; rotavirus; neumococo; campylobacter; salmonella no tifoidea; gonococia; herpes zóster.métodos: a partir de la red de vigilancia microbiológica, se trazó la serie temporal de casos desde enero de 2017 a marzo de 2023. Se distinguieron tres periodos: prepandemia (referencia), pandemia e inicio de la pospandemia. Se analizó la distribución por edad y sexo en esos periodos. Se calcularon las tasas de incidencia y las razones de tasas (rt). Se estimaron esas rt globales y sus intervalos de confianza al 95% por cada año de edad en menores de cinco años. Resultados: se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el impacto que la pandemia tuvo en cada una de esas enfermedades. Algunas, tras un periodo de silencio epidémico, revelaron un repunte intenso pospandémico. Incrementaron la rt global postpandémica la gripe (2,4), vrs (1,9) y gonococia (3,1); recuperó su nivel prepandémico el rotavirus (1,07); y disminuyeron el neumococo (0,84), campylobacter (0,83) y salmonella (0,60). En menores de cinco años, los patrones fueron específicos y hete-rogéneos para cada enfermedad.conclusiones: el impacto de la pandemia es muy diferente en estas enfermedades. Las infecciones víricas estacionales pediá-tricas y de transmisión respiratoria son las que más se ven afectadas, pero con patrones de recuperación de la normalidad distintos. Las infecciones bacterianas gastrointestinales sufren menos variaciones, salvo el rotavirus. La gonococia no interrumpe su tendencia al aumento avistada ya en la prepandemia. El herpes zóster muestra un ligero incremento pospandémico. Se han estudiado varias enfermedades con distinto patrón epidemiológico durante un periodo suficiente para observar cómo se produce la salida de la fase aguda de la pandemia.(AU)

OBJECTIVES: The pattern of age distribution in East Asian temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients and age-related differences in DC/TMD diagnostic subtypes/categories were evaluated. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: TMD patients from two University-based centers in China and South Korea were enrolled. Axis I physical diagnoses were rendered according to DC/TMD. Patients were categorized into six age groups (15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, and 65-84 years; Groups A-F respectively). RESULTS: Youths/young adults (Groups A-C) formed 74.1% of TMD patients. TMJ disc displacements (74.9%), arthralgia (49.2%), and degenerative joint disease [DJD] (36.8%) were the most common TMD subtypes. The majority had combined (54.0%) and chronic (58.5%) TMDs. Youths/young adults and middle-aged/old adults had substantially lower frequencies of merely pain-related (6.2-14.5%) and intra-articular (13.8-16.8%) TMDs correspondingly. "Being female" increased the prospects of pain-related/combined TMDs by 96%/49%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: East Asian TMD patients comprised mostly of youths/young adults who had an alarmingly high prevalence of TMJ DJD.

BackgroundInfluenza was almost absent for 2 years following the implementation of strict public health measures to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The consequence of this on infections in different age groups is not yet known.AimTo describe the age groups infected with the influenza virus in 2021/22, the first post-pandemic influenza season in Denmark, compared with the previous six seasons, and subtypes circulating therein.MethodsInfection and hospitalisation incidences per season and age group were estimated from data in Danish registries. Influenza virus subtypes and lineages were available from samples sent to the National Influenza Centre at Statens Serum Institut.ResultsTest incidence followed a similar pattern in all seasons, being highest in 0-1-year-olds and individuals over 75 years, and lowest in 7-14-year-olds and young people 15 years to late twenties. When the influenza A virus subtypes A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 co-circulated in seasons 2015/16 and 2017/18 to 2019/20, the proportion of A(H1N1)pdm09 was higher in 0-1-year-olds and lower in the over 85-year-olds compared with the overall proportion of A(H1N1)pdm09 in these seasons. The proportion of A(H3N2) was higher in the over 85 years age group compared with the overall proportion of A(H3N2). The 2016/17 and 2021/22 seasons were dominated by A(H3N2) but differed in age-specific trends, with the over 85 years age group initiating the 2016/17 season, while the 2021/22 season was initiated by the 15-25-year-olds, followed by 7-14-year-olds.ConclusionThe 2021/22 influenza season had a different age distribution compared with pre-COVID-19 pandemic seasons.

PURPOSE: The current standard of care for muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy (RC). Previous research has shown under-utilization of NAC for treatment of MIBC, especially among the elderly. Our aim was to stratify NAC use by decade of life and analyze trends in use over time along with recording pathologic downstaging and perioperative outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Cancer Database was queried for patients with cT2-4NanyM0 MIBC treated with RC from 2010 to 2016 with urothelial carcinoma. Nineteen thousand nine hundred fifty seven patients met criteria for analysis. We retrospectively analyzed trends in use of NAC, readmission rate, mortality rate, and pathologic downstaging with NAC all stratified by decade of life. RESULTS: Of the 19,957 patients treated with RC for MIBC, only 30.9% underwent NAC. There was a statistically significant increase in NAC use across all age groups from 2010 to 2016. Receipt of NAC was associated with decreased age on univariate analysis (P < 0.001) and on logistic regression (OR: 0.617 for age 70-79, OR: 0.221 for age ≥80 vs. age <60; P < 0.001). Patients receiving NAC were more likely to exhibit pathologic downstaging at time of RC (OR: 3.907; P < 0.001), and this trend held for each age group examined. Among patients receiving NAC, the risk of 30 and 90-day mortality was associated with increasing age; however, age was not associated with 30-day readmission for those receiving NAC. CONCLUSION: Rates of NAC use prior to RC have increased among all age groups with the lowest utilization rate among the elderly. NAC use was associated with greater pathologic downstaging in all age groups. These data show a promising trend in the uptake of the gold standard for treatment of MIBC; however, the underlying etiology of differing rates of NAC utilization remains to be determined.

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is an acute life-threatening infection caused by the gram-negative bacterium, Neisseria meningitidis. Globally, there are approximately half a million cases of IMD each year, with incidence varying across geographical regions. Vaccination has proven to be successful against IMD, as part of controlling outbreaks, and when incorporated into national immunization programs. The South-Eastern Europe Meningococcal Advocacy Group (including representatives from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine) was formed in order to discuss the potential challenges of IMD faced in the region. The incidence of IMD across Europe has been relatively low over the past decade; of the countries that came together for the South-Eastern Meningococcal Advocacy Group, the notification rates were lower than the European average for some country. The age distribution of IMD cases was highest in infants and children, and most countries also had a further peak in adolescents and young adults. Across the nine included countries between 2010 and 2020, the largest contributors to IMD were serogroups B and C; however, each individual country had distinct patterns for serogroup distribution. Along with the variations in epidemiology of IMD between the included countries, vaccination policies also differ.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to present a temporal and spatial analysis of the 2018 measles outbreak in Brazil, particularly in the metropolitan city of Manaus in the Amazon region, and further introduce a new tool for spatial analysis. Methods: We analyzed the geographical data of the residences of over 7,000 individuals with measles in Manaus during 2018 and 2019. Spatial and temporal analyses were conducted to characterize various aspects of the outbreak, including the onset and prevalence of symptoms, demographics, and vaccination status. A visualization tool was also constructed to display the geographical and temporal distribution of the reported measles cases. Results: Approximately 95% of the included participants had not received vaccination within the past decade. Heterogeneity was observed across all facets of the outbreak, including variations in the incubation period and symptom presentation. Age distribution exhibited two peaks, occurring at one year and 18 years of age, and the potential implications of this distribution on predictive analysis were discussed. Additionally, spatial analysis revealed that areas with the highest case densities tended to have the lowest standard of living. Conclusion: Understanding the spatial and temporal spread of measles outbreaks provides insights for decision-making regarding measures to mitigate future epidemics.

The biology of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in young patients is poorly understood, and there are conflicting data regarding the recurrence for younger patients compared to older patients. We retrospectively analyzed 2348 clinically node-negative (cN0) PTC patients who underwent a thyroid lobectomy between 2008 and 2017. Young age was defined as less than 35 years old. The clinicopathological characteristics and oncologic outcomes of the young age group were compared to those of the older age group. The number of young age cN0 PTC patients accounted for 20.7% of the enrolled patients, and 24.2% were upstaged into pathologic N1a. The young age group had a significantly larger proportion of females, endoscopic/robotic thyroid lobectomies, stage N1a, and larger tumor sizes. Post-lobectomy recurrences were significantly higher in the young age group. In the Cox analysis, young age, large tumor size, and stage N1a were significant risk factors. The multivariate analysis reveals that young age and stage N1a are significant risk factors. Conversely, minimally invasive or robot-endoscopic thyroidectomies were not risk factors for post-lobectomy recurrence compared to conventional thyroidectomies. While young patients with a stage N1a had a significant risk factor for post-lobectomy recurrence, endoscopic/robotic thyroidectomy was as feasible and safe as conventional thyroidectomies in the median seven-year oncologic follow-up. Further high-quality studies are needed to elucidate the relationship between age and the risk of post-lobectomy recurrence.

Background/Aims: : The gut microbiome has emerged as a key player that mechanistically links various risk factors to colorectal cancer (CRC) etiology. However, the role of the gut microbiome in CRC pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the gut microbiota in healthy controls (HCs) and patients with colorectal adenoma (AD) and CRC in subgroups based on sex and age. Methods: : Study participants who visited the hospital for surveillance of CRC or gastrointestinal symptoms were prospectively enrolled, and the gut microbiome was analyzed based on fecal samples. Results: : In terms of HC-AD-CRC sequence, commensal bacteria, including lactate-producing (Streptococcus salivarius) and butyrate-producing (Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Anaerostipes hadrus, and Eubacterium hallii) bacteria, were more abundant in the HC group than in the AD and CRC groups. In the sex comparison, the female HC group had more lactate-producing bacteria (Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Bifidobacterium catenulatum, and Lactobacillus ruminis) than the male HC group. In age comparison, younger subjects had more butyrate-producing bacteria (Agathobaculum butyriciproducens and Blautia faecis) than the older subjects in the HC group. Interestingly, lactate-producing bacteria (B. catenulatum) were more abundant in females than males among younger HC group subjects. However, these sex- and age-dependent differences were not observed in the AD and CRC groups. Conclusions: : The gut microbiome, specifically lactate- and butyrate-producing bacteria, which were found to be abundant in the HC group, may play a role in preventing the progression of CRC. In particular, lactate-producing bacteria, which were found to be less abundant in healthy male controls may contribute to the higher incidence of CRC in males.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical outcomes after endometrial receptivity analysis (ERA). Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective cohort study involving 861 women who underwent ERA testing at certified fertility clinics in Japan, and who received subsequent personalized blastocyst embryo transfers (ET) between 2018 and 2020. Clinical outcomes, including pregnancies, miscarriages, and live births, were evaluated according to receptivity status for ERA. Results: Mean patient age was 37.7 years (SD = 4.0), and the median number of previous ETs was 2 (interquartile range, 2-3). 41.0% (353/861) of patients were non-receptive for ERA testing. Clinical pregnancy, miscarriage, and live birth rates for personalized blastocyst ET were 44.5% (226/508), 26.1% (59/226), and 26.8% (136/508) for receptive patients, and 43.1% (152/353), 28.3% (43/152), and 28.9% (102/353) for non-receptive patients, all statistically nonsignificant. Multiple logistic regression demonstrated similar nonsignificant associations between receptivity and clinical outcomes. Greater patient age, smoking, and longer duration of infertility were significantly and negatively associated with receptivity, whereas a history of delivery was positively associated and statistically significant. Conclusions: Clinical outcomes after ERA testing were similar between receptive and non-receptive patients. In this contribution, a general expression is derived for the probability density of the time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) of a simple birth-death tree, a widely used stochastic null-model of biological speciation and extinction, conditioned on the constant birth and death rates and number of extant lineages. This density is contrasted with a previous result which was obtained using a uniform prior for the time of origin. The new distribution is applied to two problems of phylogenetic interest. First, that of the probability of the number of taxa existing at any time in the past in a tree of a known number of extant species, and given birth and death rates, and second, that of determining the TMRCA of two randomly selected taxa in an unobserved tree that is produced by a simple birth-only, or Yule, process. In the latter case, it is assumed that only the rate of bifurcation (speciation) and the size, or number of tips, are known. This is shown to lead to a closed-form analytical expression for the probability distribution of this parameter, which is arrived at based on the known mathematical form of the age distribution of Yule trees of a given size and branching rate, which is derived here de novo, and a similar distribution which additionally is conditioned on tree age. The new distribution is the exact Yule prior for divergence times of pairs of taxa under the stated conditions and is potentially useful in statistical (Bayesian) inference studies of phylogenies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics and seasonal patterns of distal radius fractures (DRFs) over the preceding five years, with the aim of establishing a clinical foundation for the prevention and management of such fractures within this region. METHODS: Utilizing the Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), the clinical records of 1954 patients diagnosed with DRFs and admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University between January 2017 and December 2021 were compiled. The analysis encompassed factors such as age, gender, visitation timing, fracture side, and presence of osteoporosis. RESULTS: Out of the total 1954 distal radius fractures, 731 were males (37.4%) and the male to female ratio was 0.59:1. The median age of patients with DRFs was 56 years, with the 25th percentile being 38 years and the 75th percentile being 67 years. The average age was 50 years (standard deviation 23.3) and 1033 cases (52.7%) occurred on the left side, 885 cases (45.1%) on the right side, and 36 cases (1.8%) were bilateral, with the left side being the most frequently affected. The age group of 61-70 years (23.9%, 467/1954) exhibited the highest proportion, and the most prominent age group for males was 11-20 years (23.8%, 174/731), whereas for females it was 61-70 years (30.83%, 377/1223). In the 50 years and older group, there were 276 males and 991 females (ratio 1:3.59), with osteoporosis in 536 cases, accounting for 42.03% of the group. In terms of seasonal distribution, the highest incidence occurred during the summer and autumn months (55.1%, 1076/1954) and there were gender differences in different seasons. CONCLUSION: In east China, DRFs were predominantly female and left-sided, with the highest proportion in the age group of 61-70 years and in summer and autumn. Furthermore, gender differences were observed between the warm and cold seasons.

Introduction: This study examined occupational values, communication types, job satisfaction, and organisational commitment among clinical nurses across generations. Methods: Participants were 159 clinical nurses. Data were collected from 1 to 15 August, 2022, using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed across generations in terms of job satisfaction (F = 3.492, p = 0.03) and organisational commitment (F = 4.371, p = 0.01). However, there were no differences in occupational values (F = 0.765, p = 0.47) or communication types (F = 1.744, p = 0.18) among clinical nurses across generations. There was a moderate to strong positive correlation between job satisfaction and organisational commitment across all generations, and a moderate positive correlation between job satisfaction and occupational values among Generations Y and Z. Discussion: To improve the quality of nursing care, various intervention programs based on the generational gap among clinical nurses need to be developed, to reduce conflicts, and ultimately establishing the necessary systems through mutual understanding of education.

Background and objectives: Cartilage surgery constitutes a standard intervention in foot and ankle procedures. Currently, there is a lack of epidemiological data on its frequency, age distribution, and surgical options for cartilage surgery. This study aimed to investigate the current landscape of cartilage surgery in Germany and identify the most common procedures from an epidemiological standpoint. Materials and methods: Medical billing and reporting data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, encompassing the period 2006-2020, was examined, including all foot and ankle cartilage surgical procedures (summarized under OPS codes 5-812 and 5-801). The dataset incorporated information on the affected joint, patient age and sex, and surgery type. Each surgical procedure was categorized as "debridement", "regeneration" or "refixation". Linear and nonlinear regression analyses were employed, with a statistical significance threshold of 0.05. Results: From the total of 136,501 procedures conducted during the study period, the most frequently performed interventions were microfracture (58,252) and chondroplasty (56,135), and thus, debridement procedures were in the leading position. The use of acellular membranes was the most used regenerative technique (n = 11,414). At the ankle joint, interventions were mostly arthroscopic and in men, while foot cartilage surgeries were preferably performed via open surgery and mostly in women. Age distribution analysis revealed two primary peaks: the first in the 20-25-year-old group (ankle and foot) and the second in the 45-50-year-old group (ankle) and 55-60-year-old group (foot). Refixation and regenerative procedures were more frequent among younger individuals, while debriding procedures were more frequent among older individuals. Regenerative procedures, particularly in the ankle, significantly increased over time. Conclusions: Cartilage surgery of the foot and ankle was common, with two primary age groups predominantly affected. Notably, recent years have witnessed a considerable rise in cartilage regenerative procedures.

Child stunting prevalence is primarily used as an indicator of impeded physical growth due to undernutrition and infections, which also increases the risk of mortality, morbidity and cognitive problems, particularly when occurring during the 1000 days from conception to age 2 years. This paper estimated the relationship between stunting prevalence and age for children 0-59 months old in 94 low- and middle-income countries. The overall stunting prevalence was 32%. We found higher stunting prevalence among older children until around 28 months of age-presumably from longer exposure times and accumulation of adverse exposures to undernutrition and infections. In most countries, the stunting prevalence was lower for older children after around 28 months-presumably mostly due to further adverse exposures being less detrimental for older children, and catch-up growth. The age for which stunting prevalence was the highest was fairly consistent across countries. Stunting prevalence and gradient of the rise in stunting prevalence by age varied across world regions, countries, living standards and sex. Poorer countries and households had a higher prevalence at all ages and a sharper positive age gradient before age 2. Boys had higher stunting prevalence but had peak stunting prevalence at lower ages than girls. Stunting prevalence was similar for boys and girls after around age 45 months. These results suggest that programmes to prevent undernutrition and infections should focus on younger children to optimise impact in reducing stunting prevalence. Importantly, however, since some catch-up growth may be achieved after age 2, screening around this time can be beneficial.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies are available regarding baseline Electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters and major and minor ECG abnormalities, there is considerable controversy regarding their age and gender differences in the literature. METHODS: Data from 7630 adults aged ≥ 35 from the Tehran Cohort Study registered between March 2016 and March 2019 were collected. Basic ECG parameters values and abnormalities related to arrhythmia, defined according to the American Heart Association definitions, were analyzed and compared between genders and four distinct age groups. The odds ratio of having any major ECG abnormality between men and women, stratified by age, was calculated. RESULTS: The average age was 53.6 (± 12.66), and women made up 54.2% (n = 4132) of subjects. The average heart rate (HR) was higher among women(p < 0.0001), while the average values of QRS duration, P wave duration, and RR intervals were higher among men(p < 0.0001). Major ECG abnormalities were observed in 2.9% of the study population (right bundle branch block, left bundle branch block, and Atrial Fibrillation were the most common) and were more prevalent among men compared to women but without statistical significance (3.1% vs. 2.7% p = 0.188). Moreover, minor abnormalities were observed in 25.9% of the study population and again were more prevalent among men (36.4% vs. 17% p < 0.001). The prevalence of major ECG abnormalities was significantly higher in participants older than 65. CONCLUSION: Major and minor ECG abnormalities were roughly more prevalent in male subjects. In both genders, the odds of having major ECG abnormalities surge with an increase in age.

BACKGROUND: The literature is unclear about bite force (BF) and handgrip force (HF) in a specific group of different ages and dentate conditions, or even a predictive model for each specific group, using BF and HF as factors. OBJECTIVE: To establish the correlation between HF and BF in female participants with distinct ages and dentate conditions; also create a predictive model of BF as a function of HF. METHODS: Participants were divided into three groups (GI: young natural dentate women, n = 65; GII: adult natural dentate women, n = 67; and GIII: edentulous women users of bimaxillary complete dentures, n = 67) and subjected to an HF measurement test using a digital dynamometer. Subsequently, BF was measured using a digital gnathodynamometer in the molar region. Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and multivariate analysis of variance (α = 0.05) were performed, and simple linear regression was used to obtain a model to predict BF from HF for each group separately (α = 0.05). RESULTS: All groups presented moderate and strong correlations among the variables (GI: r = 0.838; GII: r = 0.714; GIII: r = 0.646). A significant difference in BF was observed (GI > GII > GIII; p < .05). GIII presented a significantly lower HF than the other groups (p < .05). Besides, three equations predicting BF, using HF, were obtained for use in young/adult dentate and edentulous women. CONCLUSION: All groups found a positive and significant correlation between BF, HF and groups. HF can be a simple and efficient method for predicting BF using the predictive models developed for women with good health.
